CS2 inventory full? Plan a Storage Unit deposit or retrieval
- Problem this solves
- A deposit, retrieval or incoming-item action runs into limited inventory space, and the next move is unclear.
- What you can do afterward
- Separate destination space from item eligibility, calculate each intermediate movement, and record the observed result before the next batch.
Separate the four checks
“Inventory full” can appear during a reward claim, a purchase or an item movement. Write down the operation that failed before applying advice about a different limit. Valve’s June 2026 update specifically added full-inventory error messages for Weekly Care Package rewards, Armory items and Major Shop cart actions. [3]
| Check | What it answers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Main inventory space | How much room you are planning to use for retrieved or incoming items. | Whether the selected item may enter a Storage Unit. |
| Space in the chosen unit | How many more items that unit can hold. | Whether another unit has the same free space. |
| Selected-item eligibility | Whether the game permits that deposit or retrieval now. | Whether the destination can fit the entire batch. |
| Trade-offer size | Whether a proposed offer is within its separate item limit. | Whether either account’s inventory has space or its items are available. |
Storage is also a location distinction. Valve says stored items are absent from the Steam Community inventory view and must be retrieved before they can be equipped, consumed, altered or traded. If you are trying to find an item rather than make room, first inspect the relevant unit in the game. [1]
Count space before choosing a batch
Valve’s Storage Unit FAQ describes the ordinary inventory limit as 1,000 and each unit as adding capacity for another 1,000 items. Use the counts and any limits shown for your current operation; the arithmetic below is a planning example, not a claim that every inventory view or overflow state uses identical counting rules. [1]
- Record the main inventory count and the count in the specific unit you will use.
- List the exact items you want to retrieve and their quantity.
- Subtract the main count from the planning capacity to find existing room.
- If that room is insufficient, calculate the additional spaces needed.
- Find that many eligible items to deposit and check that the unit can accept them.
For a capacity of 1,000 and a main count of 980, existing room is 20. Retrieving 30 items needs another 10 spaces. The plan therefore needs a successful ten-item deposit somewhere with at least ten free spaces. A list of ten items you would like to store is not enough until their current eligibility is checked.
Work through a near-full example
These are fictional counts using a 1,000-item capacity for the main inventory and the selected unit. The initial main count already includes everything counted in that observation; do not add the Storage Unit item a second time. Each row assumes the preceding movement succeeded and no other inventory activity occurred.
| Step | Main inventory | Storage Unit | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | 980 items; 20 spaces | 990 items; 10 spaces | A direct 30-item retrieval exceeds the 20 available spaces. |
| Deposit 10 | 970 items; 30 spaces | 1,000 items; no spaces | The unit can accept exactly this batch, if all ten items are eligible. |
| Retrieve the wanted 30 | 1,000 items; no spaces | 970 items; 30 spaces | The planned retrieval now fits, leaving the main inventory full. |
If only five candidate items can be deposited: the intermediate counts become main 975 and unit 995. You can fit 25 of the wanted items in the main inventory under this model, ending at main 1,000 and unit 970. Five wanted items remain stored. Identify another eligible way to make space before planning the remaining retrieval; do not repeat the original thirty-item instruction.
If both destinations start full: this deposit-then-retrieve sequence cannot begin. Inspect other units you already have for room and check what the game permits. The calculation is not a reason to delete a wanted item or send an improvised trade. Decide deliberately what should leave the main inventory and verify that the intended destination accepts it.
The full main inventory at the end of Plan A also matters if your actual goal includes claiming another reward afterward. Completing the retrieval does not leave capacity for that next step. Add every planned incoming item to the ledger before considering the task finished.
Check which items can actually move
Inspect the candidate deposit in the game. CS2 items received in a trade have seven days of Trade Protection; during that period they cannot be transferred into Storage Units. A new purchase or trade should not be treated as available storage material merely because it appears in the main inventory. [2]
Other item-type restrictions can also matter. Use the actual deposit selection and item notice for the specific item you want to move. This plan does not certify a type as eligible from its name alone. If a candidate is unavailable, remove it from the eligible deposit count and recalculate rather than assuming all items of the same broad category will work.
Retrieval has a separate purpose: items stored inside the unit must come back into the main inventory before you use or alter them. If the follow-up task is a StatTrak swap or a trade-up selection, reserve space for all required items and then check that operation’s own conditions. Retrieval alone does not establish that the whole proposed pair or set is compatible.
Move a batch and verify the result
Valve documents depositing through the item’s Move to Storage Unitaction or through the unit’s Deposit Items action. Retrieval is available from the unit. Multi-select was added to the deposit and retrieval interface in June 2026. [1] [3]
- Match the selected unit to the one in your plan, especially if you have similar names.
- Review the selected items and quantity against the available destination space.
- Perform the planned batch and then inspect both locations.
- Write down the observed counts and which items moved before starting another batch.
If a message or delay leaves the result uncertain, inspect the actual contents before retrying. Do not treat an uncertain result as proof that zero items moved. Valve also says retrieved items return to their previous inventory positions, so checking only the top of the inventory can miss a successful retrieval. [1]
Keep trade-offer size separate
Valve’s 22 April 2026 update limits trade offers containing CS2 items to 1,000 items. This is a limit on an offer, not the capacity of a Storage Unit or a lifetime allowance for an account. [4]
A proposed offer containing 1,001 CS2 items therefore needs its size addressed even if storage space is available. An offer with 999 items is within that numerical ceiling but can still have unrelated problems with availability, restrictions or the recipient. The size check alone does not diagnose a generic trade error. Use the restriction guidefor a specific trading notice, or the trade URL checks for an addressing problem.
Save the movement plan
Keep planned and observed counts separate. If a batch fails despite apparently sufficient space, the selected items, unit identity and exact message are more useful to Steam Support than a total inventory value or a guessed error cause.
