CS2 trade-up item missing from the selector? Check eligibility first
- Problem this solves
- An expected trade-up input is absent or rejected, or older advice conflicts with the current Covert and Souvenir rules.
- What you can do afterward
- Separate item location, consumption restrictions and set compatibility, then review the exact inputs and attributes you would give up.
Find where the input becomes unavailable
Start with the exact item, including its version and collection. If you own several similar copies, check the copy you intended to use rather than treating the first matching thumbnail as interchangeable.
| Observation | Next check | Do not conclude yet |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot find the item on the account | Check the acquisition record, current inventory and Storage Units. | That the contract rejected it. |
| The item is present but carries a restriction | Read the exact notice and whether consumption is permitted. | That its weapon or collection is ineligible forever. |
| The item is available but missing from this selection | Check the route, current selected set, item category and collection. | That waiting a week will make the set compatible. |
| The set can be selected | Review every input and the actual output possibilities before submitting. | That a particular desired result is guaranteed. |
A paid order with no delivered item is a delivery problem. An item inside a unit is a location problem. Resolve either through the missing-item guide before using rarity or timing explanations for a selector you have not reached.
Identify the contract route
| Route | Documented structure | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary normal-item contract | Ten same-rarity inputs; an output one rarity higher from a represented collection. | That the items and collection support this route. |
| Ordinary StatTrak contract | Ten same-rarity StatTrak inputs; normal and StatTrak inputs cannot be mixed. | Every selected item’s StatTrak status. |
| Five regular Covert inputs | The October 2025 update added a route to a regular knife or gloves from a represented collection. | The actual five-input route and eligible inputs in the game. |
| Five StatTrak Covert inputs | The same update added a route to a StatTrak knife. | That all five are the intended StatTrak Covert inputs. |
| Souvenir inputs alongside normal items | The May 2026 update permits this and describes a normal output one quality higher, with Souvenir attributes removed. | The offered route and whether you are willing to lose the Souvenir attributes. |
These distinctions come from Valve’s FAQ and the two dated updates. [1] [2] [3] The Souvenir rule does not establish every possible Souvenir Covert combination; verify the route actually offered for your proposed inputs instead of extending the table beyond those rules.
Check whether the item can be consumed now
A plausible input can be unavailable independently of its rarity. Check these states before replacing an item or buying more inputs:
- Trade Protected: CS2 items received through trades cannot be consumed during their seven-day protection period. Equipping the item is permitted, so being able to use it in a match does not establish crafting availability. [4]
- Stored: items must be retrieved from a Storage Unit before they can be consumed. Make room for the needed copies first. [5]
- Listed on the Market: listed items can remain usable in inventory but cannot be consumed. If you intend to keep an item for a contract, cancel the listing and recheck its state. [6]
A restriction ending only resolves that restriction. It does not turn a mixed normal/StatTrak set into a valid one or create a higher-rarity output for an ordinary collection that lacks one. Use the item’s actual notice for timing; keep compatibility as a separate check.
Compare the set, not just the rarity
Record each input’s rarity, normal/StatTrak/Souvenir category and collection. Then compare all rows to the chosen route. Valve’s ordinary rules require the same rarity and separate normal from StatTrak inputs. The ordinary route also needs a higher-rarity output in the relevant collection; an item at the top of such a collection cannot use that ordinary progression. [1]
Do not use this ordinary-collection check to erase the separate Covert route. Equally, do not assume that any five items with a red rarity label make a complete eligible contract. Check the exact copies and route in the current game. A guide or calculator listing an item by name is not evidence that your copy is presently selectable.
For a missing input, compare it to the items already selected. A lone StatTrak item inside a normal set is a different problem from one normal item that is still protected. Record an unknown collection or category as unknown; filling that gap with a guess makes the rest of the diagnosis unreliable.
Apply the checks to three examples
These cases are fictional and do not recommend purchasing a crafting set.
| Proposed situation | Finding | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Nine normal items plus one StatTrak item, all the same rarity | The categories conflict for the ordinary route, even if every item is currently usable. | Correct the proposed set and review every category. Waiting does not fix this mismatch. |
| A normal item fits the planned route but has active Trade Protection | Consumption is currently restricted; compatibility has not removed that restriction. | Keep its exact notice, recheck when protection ends, and then verify the full set again. |
| A selectable Souvenir item has attributes you want to preserve | Technical acceptance does not meet your preservation goal. | Keep that item out of the submission. A normal result will not preserve its Souvenir identity. |
The second case assumes the route check was actually completed; it is not a diagnosis for every recently acquired item. The third case is a reason to stop even if there is no error message. Successful selection and a suitable personal decision are separate checks.
Review what you are giving up
A completed contract exchanges the selected inputs for its result. Before final submission, treat every selected copy as an item you are giving up. Inspect distinctive finishes, counts, stickers, charms and Souvenir attributes you would regret losing; do not assume they will accompany the output. [1] [3]
Valve’s Souvenir update explicitly removes Souvenir attributes and returns a normal result. Merely reviewing or selecting a possible input is not described here as having already consumed it; the point of this check is to stop before submitting an unwanted exchange. For an accessory you intend to preserve, check the removal and recovery rulesfirst. A directly applied sticker and a detachable charm have different outcomes.
Review the actual output possibilities without treating one desired item as the promised result. Trade Protection is a system for eligible Steam trades, not a general undo mechanism for a voluntarily completed crafting operation. [4]
Keep a per-input record
If the game still rejects a set after the location, availability and route checks, a report with exact item details and the message gives Steam Support something specific to assess. Record what you checked and what remains uncertain. Do not buy another set merely to test a guessed cause.
