StatTrak swap not working? Check the pair and both counters

Published Sources checked
Problem this solves
A StatTrak swap target is unavailable, or you are unsure what happens to both weapon counters.
What you can do afterward
Check the exact pair, separate compatibility from item restrictions, and record both expected counter values before using a tool.

Check the exact weapon pair

Start with the full names of the two items in your inventory. A similar-looking weapon or a shared rifle category is not enough. Valve gives M4A1-S to M4A1-S as a supported weapon pairing and excludes moving that count to another weapon. Both sides must be StatTrak items. [1]

The finish name is useful for telling your two copies apart; it does not replace the weapon-model check. If the exact pair passes that check but one side is missing from the selection, work through its availability before buying another tool. This guide’s examples concern weapon kill counters; they do not establish every special item or Music Kit pairing.

Work out both resulting counts

The live item description calls the operation a swap. Think of the two count values trading places: the number previously on A goes to B, and the number previously on B goes to A. The tool does not combine two histories into a larger number. Calling one weapon the donor can obscure what happens to its new count. [2]

Fictional counts, assuming a compatible and completed swap
Before: A / BAfter: A / BWhy it matters
2,700 / 8484 / 2,700A does not reset to zero, and B does not become 2,784.
2,700 / 00 / 2,700A becomes zero because B supplied a zero value.
84 / 2,7002,700 / 84Swapping would move the larger count away from B.
84 / 8484 / 84The resulting numbers would be unchanged; there is no numerical gain.

The second case explains why a description such as “move the kills and reset the old skin” can seem correct for a fresh replacement. It is not the general rule. Use your actual two starting values, including a nonzero count on a weapon you have already played with.

Find why a matching item is unavailable

Compatibility and current availability answer different questions. A matching weapon can still be unavailable for the operation. Inspect each item separately and record any restriction message rather than assigning the same explanation to both.

  1. Confirm both items are on the account you are using. A saved listing or a screenshot of the replacement is not the item in your inventory. If delivery itself is unresolved, start with the missing-item checks.
  2. Retrieve stored weapons. Valve says items in a Storage Unit must be retrieved before they can be altered. Finding a weapon inside a unit is a location issue, not proof of an incompatible pair. [4]
  3. Read Trade Protection notices. CS2 items received in a trade cannot be modified during their seven-day protection period. Being able to equip and play with the weapon does not remove that restriction. [3]
  4. Check active Market listings. Valve allows listed items to remain usable in inventory, but bars modifications while listed. If you intend to keep and modify the item, cancel its listing and check its current state again. [5]

These checks identify documented blockers, not every possible game error. If none applies, keep the exact message and pair details for Steam Support. Repeatedly buying tools will not resolve a wrong weapon pairing or an item restriction.

Sequence a replacement-skin swap

Suppose you want a new M4A1-S finish to carry the count currently on your old one. Plan the swap while you still have both weapons available. Selling or delivering the old weapon first leaves you without one of the two required items for the intended operation.

  1. Check the prospective replacement’s exact weapon and StatTrak status.
  2. After obtaining it, check its actual count and current modification restrictions.
  3. Keep the old weapon available while those checks are unresolved.
  4. Calculate the resulting pair, use the tool only when it matches your intention, then verify both weapons before making a later sale decision.

Review the selected items before use

Before confirming the operation, match the two selected weapons to your record. If you own several copies of the same finish, use the details available in the game to distinguish them; a familiar thumbnail is not enough. Check the count currently on each selected copy and read the final action carefully.

Valve describes the tool as single-use. Pause if your expected result is still “both counts combined,” if a selected item is not the intended copy, or if the displayed information does not match your record. [1]After completing the action, inspect both counts rather than checking only the weapon you plan to equip.

Record a result or an unresolved failure

For an unresolved problem, a useful report names the exact pair, starting counts, item restrictions and action that failed. “The tool does not work” leaves all four unknown. If the result is unclear, check both items and whether the tool is still present before deciding to repeat the action.

StatTrak pair and result record

Use observations from your own inventory. This record calculates nothing and does not connect to Steam; write the expected exchanged counts yourself. Copy anything you want to keep before leaving or reloading this page.
