Steam account linked to wrong EA account? What to do

Steam opens an unfamiliar EA account, or the linked account uses an email you can no longer access.

What you can do afterward

Identify the linked EA account, choose the recovery route, and understand when an eligible unlink and relink is appropriate.

1. Find which EA account is linked to Steam

An unfamiliar account open in the EA app is a clue, but does not by itself establish which account Steam is linked to. Check the link using the Steam account that owns the game.

1. Open the EA Account login page in a private or incognito browser window, so an existing EA session does not obscure the check.
2. Choose Steam as the sign-in option and authenticate with the Steam account you use to launch the game. EA says a linked platform login can open the associated EA account. [3]
3. Check Connected Accounts in EA Account settings for Steam. Compare the EA account you reached with the one you expected to use. [1]

For an email hint, EA’s website instructions use Manage My Account → Change Email Address, where part of the registered address is displayed. You can also check the EA app through Settings → My account → My profile → Manage; the account page shows an email preview under About Me. [6]

If you reach a new-account or linking prompt instead, stop before confirming it. If verification blocks the check, use recovery below. Neither result is a reason to guess which account contains your progress.

3. Recover an unknown EA account or inaccessible email

If the email hint is unfamiliar, consider whether it could be an old address before assuming the link belongs to someone else. Keep a screenshot of the error with the address concealed. Do not create a replacement account simply to see whether it changes this message.

• You have the mailbox: use the password-reset link in EA’s recovery guide, enter your EA email or EA ID and follow the email instructions.
• You know the address but cannot open it: try the email provider’s recovery process.
• You cannot recover the mailbox or sign in through Steam: use Contact us on EA’s recovery page. EA can attempt account recovery. Additional verification may still be required after a successful sign-in. [3]

EA’s standard unlinking process requires access to the EA account, so you must regain access before using that method. The separate old/expired-account flow is covered below and applies only when the game offers it. [4]

4. Check the risks before unlinking and relinking

Unlinking does not transfer a game profile. EA warns that changing accounts can permanently remove access to progress, DLC, memberships, rewards and in-game purchases. Steam-linked entitlements remain associated with the original EA account. If keeping an existing profile is the goal, resolve recovery or ask EA about that profile before proceeding. [2]

If you understand that consequence and still want to change the link:

1. Sign in to the currently linked EA account and open Connected Accounts.
2. Find Steam, select Unlink, read the warning and complete any identity verification. If Unlink is unavailable, use the eligibility guidance below. [2]
3. Sign in to the EA account you intend to use. Check its identity before continuing.
4. Open Connected Accounts → Steam → Continue, authenticate with the intended Steam account and follow the linking prompts. [1]
5. Check that Connected Accounts shows the expected Steam account, then launch the game. Confirm both access and the profile shown before considering the issue resolved.

Other account messages and common questions

The game says the old EA account has expired

For an old/expired-account prompt, EA documents Recover my account for recovery. Its alternative route is Use another account → Continue, with Unlink and Create New for Steam players. This changes the link; it does not recover the old profile. Only use the choices actually offered by your game, after reviewing the risks above. [1]

How often can I change the linked account?

EA’s current guidance allows up to three linked-account switches in a rolling year. It does not promise that every account is immediately eligible. A gray Unlink button means the account is not eligible to relink. Disabled, banned or suspended accounts cannot unlink; EA provides password-reset or dispute routes depending on the restriction. Will my Apex or EA SPORTS FC progress move to the new account?

No progress transfer is included in unlinking. EA also warns of Apex leveling or item-unlock issues and EA SPORTS FC Web/Companion App access risks. Account-merging questions must go to EA Support; a merge is not guaranteed. [2]

The accounts match, but Steam shows a link2ea error

A link2ea error alone does not establish an incorrect account link. EA’s first repair steps are to relaunch the EA app, then select the game tile’s three-dot menu and choose Repair. If it persists, follow the remaining reinstall and restart steps in EA’s launch guide. Some Steam games require the EA app; check the game’s Steam store page for that requirement. [5]

Still locked out? Give EA Support the useful details

Explain the game, the exact error, whether Steam sign-in worked, and whether your goal is to recover the existing profile or change accounts. Include a redacted screenshot of the message if the support form permits it. That is more useful than simply reporting “wrong account.”

For recovery, EA asks for the original EA email, linked usernames and any invoice numbers for purchases through an EA platform. Provide those privately through EA’s support process. Do not post passwords or verification codes, and do not assume a Steam receipt guarantees EA account recovery. [3]
