Steam opens the wrong EA account: what to check before unlinking
- Problem this solves
- An EA game launched through Steam reaches an old or unfamiliar account, and unlinking may put existing progress at risk.
- What you can do afterward
- Map the account relationship, identify the progress to preserve, and choose the appropriate recovery, eligibility or launch-error route.
Identify the account Steam reaches
Write down the game, the Steam account used to launch it and the exact message. Keep any email address in the message private. “It opens the wrong account” might mean the EA app is signed into an unexpected account, the game identifies an older link, or the game never reaches an account screen at all. Preserve that distinction while investigating.
EA documents a way to try signing in through an already linked platform. Open the official EA Account login page, choose Steam as the sign-in method and authenticate with the Steam account used for the game. If it is linked, EA says this lets you view the associated account information. This is a sign-in check; do not complete a new account-linking prompt just to find out what an existing link is. [3]
In EA Account settings, inspect Connected Accounts for the Steam link. EA documents that tab as the place to see connected platforms. If the account you normally sign into by email differs from the account reached through Steam, record both separately. [1]
| Label | What it identifies | Useful observation |
|---|---|---|
| Steam-A | The Steam account launching this game | The account you actually authenticated with, rather than a remembered display name |
| EA-A | The EA account reached through that Steam sign-in | Its account information and whether Connected Accounts shows the expected Steam link |
| Desired progress | The game profile, purchases or save you want to keep | Which EA account you last used for that progress, and what supports that recollection |
| EA-B, if relevant | A different EA account you are considering | Why you want it; do not assume its progress will combine with EA-A |
If Steam sign-in fails, mark EA-A as unknown and keep the exact failure. A failed check is useful evidence; it does not prove that the game has no existing link. If the details suggest an account was changed without your permission, use the compromised-account guidance linked from EA’s troubleshooting page before attempting an account switch. [4]
Choose recovery, account change or launch repair
The linked account is the one you want to keep
If you can already sign in to that EA account, use it at EA’s sign-in prompt and retry the game from the identified Steam account. Record whether the error changes. You do not need to start recovery simply because a different account was previously open in the EA app.
If you need to regain access, use EA’s recovery instructions. Try its password reset if you can access the registered email. If the mailbox is inaccessible, EA recommends trying recovery through the email provider; linked-platform sign-in is another documented access route. When those routes are unavailable, EA offers an account-recovery support process. Reaching an account through Steam does not by itself establish that every security or account-editing step will be available. [3]
The game shows an old or expired account screen
EA separately documents an in-game old/expired-account flow. Its recovery choice is Recover my account. Its account-change flow uses Use another account, then Continue; the documented Steam-specific option is Unlink and Create New. Only follow the branch actually offered on your screen, after understanding the unlinking consequences. These labels describe that particular flow, not a universal way to bypass account access or eligibility. [1]
If your aim is to keep an existing profile, stop at the choice long enough to identify that profile’s account. A button that starts a different link is not evidence that the old progress has been recovered.
You can sign in, but Unlink is unavailable
EA’s current guidance permits up to three linked-account switches in a rolling year, subject to eligibility. A gray Unlink control is an eligibility issue to investigate, not a reason to repeatedly create accounts. EA also says disabled, banned or suspended accounts cannot unlink; its troubleshooting page provides distinct password-reset and dispute routes for those conditions. Follow the condition shown on your account. [2] [4]
The accounts match, but the game does not launch
A link2ea error has its own EA troubleshooting instructions. The first documented steps are to relaunch the EA app, then use the game tile’s three-dot menu and Repair. Follow the rest of that official article if needed. Do not treat the word “link” in the error code as proof that you must unlink accounts. The same source explains how to check a game’s Steam store page for its EA app requirement. [5]
Check what changing the link would leave behind
EA states that progress will not move to the replacement account and warns of permanent loss of access to progress, DLC, memberships, rewards and in-game purchases. Its Steam-specific explanation says entitlements remain with the originally linked EA account. Review the game-specific warnings on that page if you play EA SPORTS FC or Apex Legends. [2]
Before agreeing to any change, write one sentence: “I want to use Steam-A with EA-__ because __, and the progress I need is associated with EA-__.” If the two blanks identify different accounts, you have an account-migration question to resolve before clicking. If either is unknown, more identity checking is needed.
Keep a list of the specific game profile and content that matters to you. Asking whether one named profile or purchase will remain accessible gives support a concrete question. EA directs account-merging inquiries to its support team; that is a route to ask, not a guarantee that the accounts can be combined. [2]
Compare four account situations
| Observed situation | What the record establishes | Next useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Steam-A reaches EA-A; that is the desired account, but its mailbox is inaccessible | The intended link is identified; email access is unresolved | Work through recovery for EA-A. An account switch would change the relationship the reader wants to preserve. |
| Steam-A reaches EA-A; the reader wants a profile on EA-B | Two separate EA accounts are involved | Ask about that specific profile and eligibility before changing the link. Do not label a successful sign-in to EA-B as a completed migration. |
| An expired-account prompt offers recovery and a new-account route | The special prompt exists, but the desired account is still unknown | Identify the old account first; then choose the documented route that matches the goal. |
| Connected Accounts matches; the game shows link2ea | The observed failure is launching the game | Use EA’s launch-error steps and record the result, preserving the existing link. |
Make your account record and next request
If you need EA Support, begin with the account you are trying to recover, the game, the exact error and the access checks already attempted. Explain whether you want the existing progress preserved or are asking about a different account. Keep “I cannot access the email” separate from “Steam sign-in also fails,” since these are different observations.
EA lists the original EA email, linked usernames and any invoice numbers for purchases through an EA platform as helpful recovery information. Supply the requested identifiers privately through EA’s official process, not in a public forum or this worksheet. If you do not have an EA-platform invoice, say so; a Steam purchase record should not be presented as guaranteed proof of ownership of an EA account. Recovery and eligibility remain decisions for EA’s account process. [3]
Sources and review notes
EA’s public account and launch documentation was checked for this guide. The account maps and cases are illustrative; we have not accessed your accounts, tested a recovery, or verified your eligibility to unlink. Use the options and notices EA actually shows you.
