Steam trade awaiting mobile confirmation, but nothing appears?
- Problem this solves
- Steam requests trade approval, but the mobile confirmation is missing or fails to load.
- What you can do afterward
- Compare the current offer, account and approval channel, then document a persistent mismatch.
Start with the current Steam offer, then compare it with the confirmation view for that account. A notification, a sign-in approval and a trade confirmation are different things. When Steam requires a trade confirmation, it must be completed before the offer proceeds. An empty app view does not identify why that step is missing. Confirmation requirements [1]
This guide is for a trade that Steam explicitly says needs confirmation. Its purpose is to help you locate the unresolved step and describe a persistent mismatch accurately. The examples are fictional. There is no claim here that refreshing, waiting a fixed number of hours or reinstalling will fix every empty confirmation list.
Check the current offer before chasing the notification
Open Steam directly and check the account involved. From Inventory, open Trade Offers and inspect the relevant sent or received offer. Use your trade offers and Trade History to distinguish an unresolved offer from a completed exchange. Match the counterparty, items and approximate time; a similar item name alone is not enough.
Write down the exact current status. If a marketplace says “awaiting confirmation” but Steam shows a different state, keep both records. The external order may describe a separate step in its workflow. Steam’s current offer is the relevant evidence for what Steam still requires; the site’s order reference is relevant when asking that site to reconcile its own status.
For an outgoing offer, Valve describes confirmation followed by sending the offer to the other person, who can accept, decline or counter it. Seeing an active sent offer therefore does not mean your own phone still needs to approve it. Check whose action is outstanding. Offer workflow [2]
Choose the next check from the evidence you have
Choose the state you can actually see
This checklist uses your observations. It does not connect to Steam or determine whether an offer is valid.
Identify what Steam is asking you to approve
| What you see | What to compare | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Steam sign-in approval | The device and sign-in you initiated | Approving access does not itself approve a trade. |
| Mobile trade confirmation | The actual recipient and exact items in the exchange | An app badge alone does not identify the offer being approved. |
| Explicit email-confirmation prompt | The account’s associated email and the action named in the message | An empty mobile list does not prove that this email step failed. |
| External marketplace confirmation button | The site’s order and the corresponding Steam offer | The site’s button or success label does not replace a required Steam approval. |
Valve documents mobile confirmations for accounts using the Mobile Authenticator and email confirmations otherwise. Follow the channel the current official Steam prompt actually requests. Steam Mobile also provides sign-in approvals and customizable notifications as separate features. Confirmation channels [1] App features [3]
If Steam requests email, check the associated mailbox and spam folder. If you cannot access that mailbox, record the access problem and use Steam Support. Do not forward a confirmation link to someone offering to click it for you. For mobile approval, open the official Steam Mobile app directly; Steam Chat and Steam Link are separate apps. Official apps [3]
Compare the account and the two views at the same time
- Identify the account on the offer. Check whether the browser, desktop client and mobile app are showing the account you intended. Steam Mobile supports multiple accounts; being signed in somewhere is not sufficient to establish that you are examining the right trade. Multiple-account support [3]
- Open the trade-confirmation section directly. Check its account context and the actual list. Treat the phone notification as a prompt to investigate, rather than the transaction record.
- Capture the disagreement. Note the offer’s current wording and the confirmation view at approximately the same time. Distinguish an empty list from a loading failure or an error such as “Invalid credentials supplied.” That wording is an observation, not a diagnosis of the underlying cause.
- Refresh the view or reopen the app once. This is a limited check for a changed display, not a guaranteed fix. Record whether the result changes. If it persists, move to the support record below instead of repeating the same action indefinitely.
If you recently changed phones, establish whether you transferred the authenticator, removed it or lost access. Those are different situations. Valve documents a two-day trade and Market restriction after an official transfer and a 15-day restriction after removal. Repeatedly removing Steam Guard is a consequential action, not a neutral refresh. Use the phone-transfer and recovery guide if that is the real access problem. Transfer guidance [4] Removal restrictions [5]
Separate missing approval from a changed offer
A pending offer can change while you are troubleshooting. Valve says selling or trading away an item included in an offer can make that offer inactive. Multiple pending offers may include the same item; completion of one can make the others inactive. A counteroffer is a new offer, and pending offers have an expiry shown beneath them. Re-read the current record before creating a replacement. Inactive offers, counteroffers and expiry [2]
Before resending, establish whether the original completed, remains active or is inactive. If an external order is involved, resolve which Steam offer belongs to it. Compare every replacement recipient and item with the intended exchange. Valve’s trade-redirection guidance describes the danger of an intended offer being replaced with one to a different account. Trade redirection [6]
If Steam records completion but the skin is absent, switch to tracing the completed item. If the current message names a restriction and an expiry, use the restriction guide. Neither problem can be resolved merely by finding an old confirmation notification.
Four examples of choosing the right next action
- A badge remains, but the trade completed
- The current history records the intended exchange. Inspect the received items. The badge is not evidence that the completed trade still requires approval; do not send the same exchange again.
- The browser requests approval for account A; the app shows account B
- Check the confirmation context for account A in the official app. If you no longer have access to A’s authenticator, use the recovery route. Approving a sign-in for B cannot establish approval of A’s trade.
- The app works except for a confirmation error
- Record the exact error, app version and matching current offer status. One successful news-feed load does not prove the confirmation view is healthy. Send the specific mismatch to Steam Support rather than guessing that authenticator removal will repair it.
- A marketplace order says waiting; Steam shows an active sent offer
- Check whether the counterparty still needs to accept and confirm which offer the order references. Provide the site with those records if its order status needs investigation. An additional approval on your own phone may not be the missing step.
Give Support a mismatch it can investigate
If Steam still requires confirmation and the correct account’s confirmation view stays empty or fails, open Steam Guard troubleshooting [7]. Include the current records and the limited checks you performed. State what remains unknown. Avoid claims that an outage, queue or damaged authenticator is the cause unless Steam has established it for your case.
Problem: Steam requests trade confirmation, but [empty list / exact error]. Steam account involved: [identify the account through the official support form] Offer reference and current status: [reference; wording shown by Steam] Offer direction: [sent / received / counteroffer] Expected counterparty and items: [details needed to identify this exchange] Confirmation channel requested: [mobile / email / unclear] Observed at: [date, time, time zone] Phone, operating system and Steam Mobile version: [versions] Account checked in the app: [same as offer / mismatch found / unresolved] What loads: [other app pages; confirmation view result] Recent phone or authenticator action: [transfer / removal / none / unknown] Single refresh or reopen result: [what changed, if anything] Screenshots: [offer status and confirmation view; redact unrelated information] Please investigate: [the specific disagreement between these current records].
Use the official support form for account details. Never include a password, SMS code, Steam Guard code, recovery code, authenticator secret or full confirmation link in a public troubleshooting post. If the request itself is unfamiliar, stop approval attempts and follow the account-security recovery steps first.
