Steam Market funds pending: reconcile your Wallet balance

Published Sources checked
Problem this solves
A completed Market sale does not match the available Wallet balance, or its proceeds still appear pending.
What you can do afterward
Match the net receipt to available and pending funds, account for later spending, and prepare a specific support request.

Start with your own sale record. An item disappearing from inventory does not establish a completed sale, and a balance rising by less than the sale amount can be explained by later spending. The checks below separate those situations.

Identify which amount is pending

Match the action and the location of the pending label before applying any timing advice.

Match the problem to its starting record

The Wallet FAQ’s two-hour escalation advice concerns purchased Wallet funds, not Market-sale proceeds. Bank authorizations and refunds also have their own records and instructions. [2] [4]

Confirm the sale and seller amount

  1. Check the signed-in account. Match it to the account on the relevant receipt.
  2. Find the transaction in Market history. Steam provides this through the Community Market and Account Details and emails transaction receipts. [1]
  3. Match the item, quantity and date. Several similar sales can produce different amounts. Keep their references separate.
  4. Identify your seller proceeds. Use the recorded amount due to your Wallet, rather than the buyer’s total including fees. If you are using a net seller amount, do not subtract fees again.

If the item is still listed for sale, you have an active offer rather than a completed sale. If neither the item nor a sale record can be found, follow the missing-item record checks. If the disagreement is only between the buyer price and your seller amount, use the fee and cent-rounding guide.

Record available and pending separately

Steam’s Wallet FAQ identifies the balance beside your profile name as the current available amount. Record it and any separately displayed pending amount at the same check time. A combined pending amount may need to be compared with several sales; do not assign it all to the latest one without evidence. [2]

For example, suppose you recorded $5 available and no pending funds before a sale with $8 net proceeds. With no other activity, a later observation of $5 available plus $8 pending accounts for the full $13. The amount available for a purchase is $5.

Use the same account and currency in each comparison. If client and web displays disagree, confirm the account and refresh once before capturing the mismatch. If you did not record a starting balance, leave it unknown. You can still document the sale and current message, then take a second observation later; do not invent an earlier zero to make the worksheet work.

Account for later purchases

Steam normally uses Wallet funds first at checkout unless you change the payment choice. Review Account Details → View purchase history for the interval you are comparing, and review Market history for Market purchases. [3] [1]

Use the actual Wallet portion of each purchase. A $12 purchase funded by $4 of Wallet balance and $8 from another payment method contributes a $4 Wallet debit, not $12. Include other documented credits or adjustments in the same interval. A receipt and a history entry for one purchase count as one debit, not two.

Reconcile the balances

Choose an interval for which you have both starting and ending observations. Compare: starting available + starting pending + new net credits − Wallet debits = expected ending available plus pending. When pending money becomes available, it moves between those two categories; adding it again as a new sale credit would double-count it.

Compare your entered Wallet records

The initial values are a fictional USD example: $5 starting balance, two net sale amounts of $8 and $3, and $4 of later Wallet spending. The ending observation is $4 available and $8 pending. Replace every field to check your own interval.

Use one USD account and the same starting and ending observations. Enter zero only for a known zero; leave unknown amounts blank. Include net seller amounts after fees. A pending amount becoming available is not another credit. This worksheet calculates locally without connecting to Steam or submitting these inputs, and does not save them after a page refresh. It cannot check records or predict release.

Arithmetic from your entered amounts
CheckUSD amount
Expected available plus pending$12.00
Observed available plus pending$12.00
Observed minus expected$0.00
Ending available amount entered$4.00
Ending pending amount entered$8.00

The entered amounts reconcile. This does not prove that a particular sale released. Only the entered available amount is shown separately as available; the combined total is not a spending budget.

The loaded example combines two sales and a later purchase: $5 + $8 + $3 − $4 = $12, matching $4 available plus $8 pending. For another currency, follow the same record comparison using that currency’s displayed amounts; do not convert amounts into the USD tool.

Check the availability message

Copy the exact message and note when you saw it. Keep a transaction-specific message with that sale’s receipt; keep an overall pending-balance message with the balance observation. If the displayed estimate passes while the funds remain pending, or Steam shows no usable estimate, ask Support about that transaction using the packet below.

If another sale changes the overall message, save both observations. The changed label alone does not establish that the first sale’s wait restarted. Report the sequence instead of assigning a fresh deadline to every pending sale.

Choose an action from your result

  • The records reconcile and some funds remain pending: save the receipt and availability message. If it provides an estimate, check again against it. Reconciliation accounts for the money; it does not make the pending portion spendable.
  • The difference equals a later Wallet purchase: match that debit to its receipt, including only the Wallet-funded part. A smaller increase in the balance is then explained by spending.
  • A difference remains unexplained: check net versus gross amounts, missing or repeated transactions, account, currency and observation times. Send Support the remaining difference and the records used to calculate it.
  • A starting amount is unknown: skip the historical total. Submit the known sale, current balances and message if you need help; label the missing observation as unknown.
  • You do not recognize a sale or debit: use the account-security recovery steps immediately and preserve the transaction records.

Completed Market transactions are final under Steam’s Market FAQ; a pending label does not make a sale cancelable. The proceeds are Steam Wallet funds, with no bank withdrawal option. [1]

Copy a support record

Start with Steam’s Community Market help. Copy this packet into the relevant private support request, completing only the fields you can verify. You can ask about a pending estimate even when the balances reconcile.

Issue: [unexplained balance difference / pending availability message]
Account and Wallet currency: [account, currency]
Market sale: [item, quantity, reference, date and time zone]
Net seller proceeds: [amount after fees]
Current available balance: [amount, checked at date/time/time zone]
Current pending amount: [amount, checked at the same time]
Availability message: [exact wording, or no message shown]
Earlier observation, if recorded: [time, available and pending amounts]
Relevant later activity: [Wallet debits and new credits, each counted once]
Unresolved question: [what these records do not explain]
Attachments: [sale record and relevant balance/message screenshots]

End with the question your records support: “What explains the remaining $3 difference?” or “The displayed estimate has passed; please check the availability of this sale’s proceeds.” Redact unrelated personal details from attachments. Keep passwords, Steam Guard codes and payment credentials out of the packet.
